Entropion and Ectropion

The most common forms of entropion and ectropion are eyelid dysfunctions that occur when the lower eyelid and eyelashes turn inward or outward causing the lid and lashes to rub against the cornea and conjunctiva or foreign body sensation and tearing. Both conditions are most commonly due to aging changes of the eyelid with loosening of the ligaments both laterally and inferiorly. Both conditions can cause impaired vision in addition to discomfort.

Although both can be treated conservatively, definitive treatment consists of surgical repair of the loose ligaments. While recovery time may vary, you will be able to read and drive the following day and should refrain from strenuous activity for about a week. The surgery itself is often quite short, lasts less than one hour, and all patients return home the same day.
